I talked to Mrs. Doug tonight. She said they had a good week. They had three doctors appointments this week. They had blood work done on Tuesday. On Thursday he went to the doctor who did the skull surgery and he released him. He said he was way ahead of where he expected him to be. The nurse said she kept expecting him to be wheeled in via ambulance on a stretcher, and was really surprised to see him come in the front door via wheel chair. On Friday, they went to his heart doctor and he put him on Coumadin. One of the medications he's on is to control his irregular heart beat, but he might have to come off of it because Dr. Adams was concerned it could cause another stroke. But for now, he's still on it. He's going to trace back when he started that medication and see why and who administered it before he takes him off of it.
With physical therapy, they have been walking him and about 20 minutes of leg exercises. This next week, the PT named Braxton said he's going to teach him some dance steps to try to work on his balance. He's pretty good at standing still without having to hold onto something.
They only saw the OT once this week because of the dr appointments. She worked mainly with his arm and on transfers to the bathtub.
His speech therapist is his niece. He has said "fish, seat, four, five," and several words that start with the "m" sound like "me, & ma." She's always good to explain why they are working on something, which seems to help him. He's responding really well to her. Mrs. Doug said she's been making a point to try to leave the room while he's working on speech so he can focus on the therapist.
Yesterday, when they went to Joe's office, Mrs. Doug had called to get directions and she could tell Bro. Dale was getting upset with her. He knew exactly how to get there and didn't think she needed to call and get the directions.
Wednesday, while Mrs. Doug was out running errands, Jim Blue came and sat with Bro. Dale. When she got home, she found some flyers from the Jehovah's Witnesses that were rolled up to be thrown away. Bro. Dale took the pamphlets and showed her who brought them by.
Mrs. Doug asked Bro. Dale if he wanted to come to church in the morning and he nodded "yes!" So they are planning to be there in the morning to hear the choir!!! She said she's not going to attempt his tie, but she aims to get his suit on him.
Mrs. Doug is looking for someone who can come sit with Bro. Dale tomorrow afternoon from about 1:30-3 so that she can go see the Bible Drillers do their associational drill.

Mrs. Doug said how much it meant to her to see everyone Saturday. She said it was just wonderful. They are so thankful for the love everyone showed and continues to show. Now they are settling in. They've had a bunch of people out to the house to get things lined up and do lots of paper work. They've had a physical therapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist, a nurse and home health all come out and get a plan as to how things will work.
Today they had to go to the Dr. Griffin to see about getting a blood thinner to prevent a blood clot due to his atrial fibrillation and they had to do blood work, which will be required weekly with the medications he is on. Mrs. Doug is hopeful that from now own they will be able to do the blood work from the house.
Yesterday, the physical therapist had him walking him in the house. They didn't have the cane he needed yesterday, but it came in today, so he'll be able to use it tomorrow. Each therapist will be coming three times a week. She said they are all really nice and they are looking forward to working with them.
Next week, they are going to try to have someone come and sit with him so that she can go back to work. She wants to try to get on a more normal schedule and she's hoping that will help motivate him to stay with it and work. He seems to be a little discouraged and unmotivated since he's been home so far. So we need to be praying specifically for him in that regard and ask God to show us what we can do to encourage him. Mrs. Doug said to feel free to stop by and visit and offer encouragement to him. If you would like to bring a meal, coordinate with Tammy Watkins at the church office (682-7458) so we can spread it out and make sure we aren't all bringing the same stuff.

Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate with us Bro. Dale's coming home! It was such a special time for us to share with them and I know it meant so much to them. Bro. Dale was clearly overcome with the outpouring of love and support. It didn't occur to me to pray and ask God for pretty weather today, but it couldn't have been prettier if I had. Just one more way God shows us that He does more than we can ask or imagine.

Mrs. Doug called and I could tell she is super excited about the fact that they are coming home tomorrow! She said Bro. Dale is too. He has had a huge grin on his face all day! She doubts either of them get a whole lot of sleep tonight. But she's got the car loaded and thinks they will be discharged by 10 in the morning. She's going to call me when they leave Jackson and again when they get to the county line. I will post here as soon as I hear anything! We hope to see as many of you as possible on Main Street in Vardaman around 1pm tomorrow for the "Welcome Home Line-up!" We want to give Bro. Dale a welcome that shows how excited we are for him and how much support they have here at home. If you can make a sign or banner, then great! If not, just come stand along Main Street and cheer when they arrive with their police escort. They will be traveling through Grenada to Calhoun City on to Vardaman, so anyone along the route that wants to post a sign or be ready to wave, the more the merrier!
Another surprise that Bro. Dale has waiting on him tomorrow is his daughter Joan will be flying in and joining us on Main Street! He will be so excited to see her, I know.
Mrs. Doug also reported that today he got all good reports. They worked really hard this week on transfers to make sure that Mrs. Doug knows how to get him in and out of all sorts of situations. She thinks she's ready.
During their time in Jackson, they bonded with all of the nurses and therapists there. Mrs. Doug said they have all just been so incredibly good to them and so sweet and encouraging. They said special good-byes today to their physical therapist there. She told Mrs. Doug she feels like a mother hen letting her little chick go. They all shared some tears today.

We are inviting everyone that is available and interested to participate in a "welcome home line-up." They will be traveling through Grenada, Calhoun City and to Vardaman. They will be coming by the church before venturing home. We thought it would be awesome for everyone to welcome him/them by showing your love and support and lining the highways, driveways and downtown! As many as are able to gather on Main Street in Vardaman with posters, banners, streamers, etc, the better!! But if you aren't able to be there, whether you will be on the ball field, working in the yard or wherever you may be, please take a few minutes to participate. Let's show our love and support once again by welcoming them home this Saturday, March 24th! Mrs. Doug said they expect they will be discharged around 10 am on Saturday, so I suspect it will be around 1pm or a little later when they will be arriving. I will have her call me when she gets to the county line and I will post here and on facebook as soon as I hear. The police will be ready to escort them from Derma to Vardaman. I had to let her in on the secret, but it will be a complete surprise for Bro. Dale. Let's surprise her though with a great turn out!
Mrs. Doug reported that he's had a good day today. They've started an oral medication to help with the tightening of his right hand. They also fitted him with a new splint that will help him stretch those fingers out and such.
She said that the OT was named Beverly and had him trying to count again today with his exercises. He was able to say "one" just as clearly as anyone and he was trying to say "two" as well. But she asked him if he could say her name and he got the "buh" sound out and eventually had it more like "Bev." Mrs. Doug called and said they pulled the feeding tube today. It was a really quick and easy procedure and didn't seem to hurt him much. Mrs. Doug said she told him he's got an extra belly button now.
Last night she said they were talking and he said "what" and "you." So he's getting more words in.
Today she talked to the OT and she had told Mrs. Doug that as they were working, she told him to count with her on the sets of exercises. He would only say, "yep" but she said eventually he will come out with the numbers by doing that. They have something to judge his range of motion with his right arm and he was able to push it forward from his elbow and pull it back also, which he had not been able to do before. So he definitely has usage of his right forearm and his shoulder. He wasn't just putting his weight into it, his arm was doing the work.
In PT, yesterday and today he walked all the way to the end of the hall (about 200 feet) and they are still working on getting that right foot to not turn toward the left and cross over. He walked the full length without having to sit down today, so his endurance is building. This afternoon they put him on a bike and put his feet on the pedals with the exercise bands across his feet. He was able to ride the bike for 10 minutes with the tension up to about 5. So he was doing really well with that.
Yesterday they worked on transfers in and out of the tub and such. He's getting pretty good at that. Even now, Mrs. Doug is getting him up and helping him get dressed in the mornings, so she feels good about that much. She can get him out of the bed and all of that. She said she feels really comfortable with that.
Tonight at supper she was commenting that she thought they were going to cut back on the double portions and he poked her and shook his head no! Everyone got a good laugh about that. But she was thinking about how heavy he's going to be to lift if he doesn't quit eating so much! :)
They were talking about when he had the stroke the other night and he indicated that there were things he could remember about it too. They had a long conversation about it and worked through where they'd been how far he'd come. She reminded him that she kept telling the doctors, "he's gonna make it because the Lord isn't through with him yet." That obviously meant a whole lot to him. She told him that at some point she was going to let him go back and read through the blog to see where all he's been.
Tonight they were sitting there and Mrs. Doug started playing yahtzee on the ipad and he took interest in it so they played that together for a good while. That's the first time he's shown any interest in that. She was impressed with how well he did with it.
They are getting excited about coming home Saturday and getting into their routine. She knows people are praying for them as they transition and God will answer those prayers and show them how to do it. Please keep the prayers coming!

Mrs. Doug called and said they are coming home next Saturday! He will be able to come home in her vehicle and home health will be coming in at different times to assist. The rest of the time, Mrs. Doug will be able to take care of him. She said she'd let us know what kind of help she will need in terms of people coming to help sit with him. I'm sure many will want to help by bringing food, but she said they don't eat enough for it to be necessary for someone to bring food everyday. (He's not on double portions anymore!) She said maybe every 2-3 days someone could bring a meal and that would be plenty for them.
They are going to take the feeding tube out on Monday so he will be completely "unplugged" at that point. She thinks the trach will be healed by next week as well.
She got his evaluation Thursday. He has walked 200 feet with a 4-pronged cane. They are building up the left shoe a little, which helps him pick up the right leg better. She said before they get done he's liable to be 7 feet tall! But at least it's working! With the leg built up, he could walk better and didn't have to have the brace on his leg.
As for his speech, they have started working with his writing more. She would write down a word and he would write a word with similar letters, but he wasn't getting the exact word. So if she showed him the word "pen" he wrote the word "pan" or something like it. They have been giving him pictures to choose from and ask him questions such as, "which one would you comb your hair with?" And he would point to the comb. Or "which one would you open the door with?" and he would point to the key. Also, he's started using the ipad some more. Johanna had sent some pictures in an email and he was looking at them and had to make it scroll down to see the rest of him and he was able to do that.
In OT they were able to stand him up and balance him for about 7 minutes without anyone touching him. They also had him trying to shoot a basketball in a goal. He made at least 2 points! Then they brought the goal closer and had him toss bean bags into it and shift his weight. He was able to do that without help as well. He could feel when he was getting off balance and shift himself back around to correct. The therapist was right there to help catch him if he needed it. They've continued the e-stim on his right arm and hand. He's been having some leg cramping in his right leg, but she thinks it's because they've been working it so much.
Otherwise, they've just enjoyed sitting outside and soaking in the nice weather this week. They are looking forward to being home, even though they realize that will be a big transition for them. The therapists have encouraged them by telling them that once he gets home in his familiar surroundings, he will really continue to improve. Mrs. Doug and Bro. Dale are aware that they will not be able to do this alone. It will take a lot of grace and strength from the Lord as well as help from friends and family. Start praying now that God will give them peace, strength and discernment as they evaluate what their needs are so they will be able to communicate those needs to those of us who are eager to help.

March 13, 2012 - pictured with the perault kids
Today Jason and I along with the kiddos went to visit Bro. Dale and Mrs. Doug in Jackson. It was so good to see them. Bro. Dale looks really good. We went out on the patio to enjoy the sunny and warm weather and pleasant breeze. The kids warmed up to him all over again really quickly and we had a good time. I could tell he was really amazed at how big Caleb had gotten since he's last seen him. Caleb seemed to take to him pretty easily! It was so sweet watching Bro. Dale talk really soft to him as he looked down and smiled at him. He gave all the kids hugs and kisses as well.

She also told me that they had him working on looking for things in some cabinets today. In particular, they are working on getting him to look to his right. So they would place the items to his right side and have him find them. They asked him to find some blueberry muffin mix, some flour, some sugar and things like that. Bro. Dale had a really good day today. They had him walk up a flight of stairs today with them behind him. He picked his left leg up first and then he pulled his right leg up. On the way down, he would step down with the bad leg first. The therapists were just there to guide him. Then they took him outside and allowed him to walk outside for a while. They walked over towards the children's hospital and then sat down on a bench. At one point, they put his arm around Mrs. Doug and he just pulled her close and gave her a kiss. He was proud of himself and grinning really big! She blushed a little too. ;)
They did the e-stem on his right arm. Then they had him move from the mat to the chair a few times. He played a memory game with playing cards. He was able to match them up and seemed to enjoy playing the game.
His brace came in today, so tomorrow he will be able to use that with his walking. They expect that once he gets that fitted brace on, he will really take off with his walking.
His speech therapy is going well too. She was using word pictures with him today. She has the sign language for "I'm finished," or a drink. Once they get home, they plan to have a board set up for communicating things such as a picture of a water glass, a sprite can or tea so that he can point to the picture and let her know what he wants. So it will be a combination of sign language and pictures. And then they are making up some signs of their own. For instance, they had him laying on his side last night and he moved his hand down in a straight line down his body and she finally figured out that he wanted to lay on his back. Basically charades! :) But she says she's getting better at it. As far as speaking, he is saying "yep" a lot now.
Keep praying for increased physical strength for Bro. Dale and restoration of the use of his body. And pray for on-going strength for Mrs. Doug too.

They did the e-stem on his right arm. Then they had him move from the mat to the chair a few times. He played a memory game with playing cards. He was able to match them up and seemed to enjoy playing the game.
His brace came in today, so tomorrow he will be able to use that with his walking. They expect that once he gets that fitted brace on, he will really take off with his walking.
His speech therapy is going well too. She was using word pictures with him today. She has the sign language for "I'm finished," or a drink. Once they get home, they plan to have a board set up for communicating things such as a picture of a water glass, a sprite can or tea so that he can point to the picture and let her know what he wants. So it will be a combination of sign language and pictures. And then they are making up some signs of their own. Mrs Doug emailed me the update and some pictures:
"The man in the pictures has had the same kind of stroke Dale has. His speech and right side have also been effected. His name is George Kelly and he was discharged today. He works for the city of Jackson with the water department.

When we first got here George wouldn't eat anything or try anything. One day he and Dale made eye contact when they were in the dining room and Dale nodded to George and they started to communicate with each other through nods and handshakes. I kept telling George they would finally get something better to eat and to keep trying. Dale has claimed his spot at the table and George sat across from me because their legs were so long they kept getting their wheel chairs tangled up. They always sat close to each other if they could.
One day we met George in the hall as we were going to the therapy room and he stuck his hand out to shake Dale's. Dale & I had gone outside and stayed for awhile and when we came back in I told Dale "let's go see if George has left." When we got to his room he came flying out. They said he had been looking everywhere for us. While I was talking to him I told him "God Bless You." Dale also said that to him. You could see him mouth the words and it was like a whisper but he said it:)
This past week was really good. On Friday they started teaching us how to get in the tub with a bench and how to help him stand and move to the bench. They also worked on Friday with getting in and out of a car. He did that really well. They told him to get plenty of rest this weekend because they were going to hit it hard on Monday. They are using a lot of e-stem on his arm and shoulder on the right side to get movement started. He can feel the stimulation when they get it started. We are working a lot on moving from the wheelchair to the mat and to the bed. Standing and pivoting from one place to the other. I am with him in all his therapy except for Speech & respiratory.
They are having him a brace made to wear on his right leg to help support it. It will be from the knee down. They asked when they were measuring him for it if he wanted a design on it and I suggested he get skulls and crossbones. He looked over at me like I had lost my mind. So, it's going to be clear. While we were outside today his head got red so, I suggested that we get the red bandanna handkerchief and tie it around his head with his crossbones brace and he would look bad then. He looked at me and shook his head and laughed. I asked him if he thought I was crazy and he nodded yes.
Just a little more humor for the night. We are still the same. He wants to be at the dining room at least 10 min. early and I say why not wait until 1 min. till. They are usually late anyway but we are usually there waiting on them. We are not late for therapy either.

Mrs. Doug emailed the update:
"We just got the report on our second week. He moved from dependent in
expression, problem solving, memory to maximum. From maximum in
showering, dressing, transfers from bed, mat to minimum. They changed
our discharge date to 3/24/2012. So, we get another week of therapy.
He is doing so good and trying so hard:)
Today he was able to lift his legs and put them on the mat and on the
mat when he would lay down without any help. I told him he had to be
able to do that because after I had knee surgery he made me do it. He
smiled and winked at me. He has not been able to do that before
today.
In speech he is able to recognize the pictures she asked him. What
she is trying to do is develop a way of communication between us with
pictures right now until the speech comes. We have all realized you
still can't give him too many commands at one time. He just can't
grasp it.
In PT he is able to walk 90ft. The cross over with the right foot is
getting better. If we can get him on course he can really take off.
Today with staffing of the therapists the schedule we usually have was
canceled. So, it is now almost 5:00 PM and he has been up since
8:00Am this morning.. He can't wait to get in bed tonight.
We,re going to supper now. Love ya'll"

Bro. Dale is doing great. They put him on parallel bars and they put a board in the middle to keep his feet in line. His foot can't go over in front of the other with it that way.
In OT they have been using the electric stimulation on his hand and he's been able to open and close it.
In Speech, they gave him clearance to eat whatever he wanted and double portions to build him back up. Today they brought him a piece of cordon bleu chicken, yellow rice, green beans, ham, a tomato wedge, a roll, 2 Boost puddings, and a glass a tea. He ate all of it except for a little of the pudding. Mrs. Doug asked if he was planning to plow a field after all that!
The doctor came through and said that she watched him in speech today and he did really well with that and she could tell how hard he was trying. (Of course we had no doubt that Bro. Dale was going to do his best!)
Tomorrow most of his therapy will be in the afternoon. They will do evaluations tomorrow, so there will be more to report tomorrow.

"We got the week started off to a good start. They did another swallow
test today and will be going to a more regular diet. The thing they
are concerned with most is not getting strangled on liquids
.
In PT today they said he did great on Friday and had walked 150 ft.
and climbed 3 steps and went down them We did the same thing today
and also went outside to walk on the deck today. He is still having a
little trouble with the right foot crossing over the left one but it's
not as bad as it was last week.
In OT we worked on transfers. He is getting much better at being able
to move from the wheel chair to the mat and back. They also put a
roller type of brace on his right arm and had him try and move it
forward and then back. He was able to move it a little but it was
mainly coming from his shoulder area but that is great because we have
movement and it has to start somewhere.
In speech she said he was making great progress. We are trying to
get him to talk and say anything because the more he tries to say the
more easily the words will start to come. That might be a challenge
because he doesn't talk a lot anyway. Today when we were walking and
he started to get tired he said Help.
To each of you who were a part of the Benefit Saturday night we want
to say THANK YOU!! To each of you who came I was so proud to see you
and as sorry if I missed seeing you. It has been great to get to
share with Dale everything that went on this weekend and everyone I
saw. When I told him about everyone who was working Saturday and has
been for weeks before getting ready for the event he just smiles and
nods his head. I know he wishes he could have been there. God is so
Good!! As I sit here typing this I think of the fun that was had
Saturday and the love that was shared and knowing that each of you
gave God the Glory for it all.
We had company today Tony, Tammy & Addie Beth Watkins came by right
after lunch and visited awhile. Clay, Rachael & Little Bill Spencer
came by late this afternoon and visited. I got to hold Little Bill,
he is so handsome and sweet. It was great to see them all.
We are so excited about the Sunday School and Church attendance
yesterday. Dale smiled real big when I told him about it this morning
and his eyes lit up and he nodded real big.
We love you and thank God for each of you,

March 4, 2012 - with picture of grandkids
Mrs. Doug said Bro. Dale got so emotional when she told him about the benefit. She said he just cried. But he was so glad to see her and Johanna and her family. He was so thrilled. The kids were climbing up in his lap and his face was lit up. Here's a picture that Johanna sent me.
Mrs. Doug commented how much fun she had last night at the benefit. She could tell everyone was enjoying themselves and she certainly did. She said the only thing that could have possibly made it better would have been if Bro. Dale could have been there with her. They were so appreciative of everyone coming and everyone's generosity was just overwhelming. They intend to use the money to stay in Jackson as long as Bro. Dale needs it and get the therapy help that he needs.
He is able to walk with just a 4-prong cane now. He's having trouble with his right leg getting in front of the left leg when he tries to take a step, but they said that's normal and they are going to be working with him on that this week. Today they had to get some laundry done. Mrs. Doug said she put the basket in his lap to carry down to the washing machine and then had him hand it to her to put in the machine. He is able to get around in the wheelchair by pushing with his left leg. When he gets close to something he can grab hold of with his left arm, he'll pull himself along that way too. And if he gets into a narrow spot, he'll back himself up and line up the wheelchair to get through it straight.
Janice called today and instead of saying "well good" like he has been doing, he will say, "well...hmmm" or "well...uh huh" or "well...yeah." She said he seems to be tired of saying "well good" and is trying really hard not to say it. He also told Janice "bye" today. Another time he was trying to say something and was getting really frustrated and he finally said, "I wouldn't..." and it kinda startled him that he said it and then didn't finish the thought. But the words are there and are starting to come out, slowly but surely.
After mentioning the Greek word "koinonia" this morning in Sunday School and then the guest preacher mentioning this passage this morning, I thought I would share this passage tonight. Our community truly demonstrated "koinonia" this weekend. And what a blessing it was. May God add to our numbers those who are being saved as a result.
"42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship (koinonia), to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." Acts 2:42
